Saturn: a purchase order system for agricultural productsThe problemThe client was a start-up business sourcing agriculture chemicals, fertilisers and agronomy to to corporate farming enterprises throughout Australia. The company's medium-term plans involved installing a full e-commerce system to handle orders via the Internet. In the short-term they required a relatively simple computerised system to manage orders and forecasts of orders from customers, consolidate those orders, produce purchase orders to their suppliers, produce delivery notes for the carrier, and print other reports for internal control. The solutionDI Management was commissioned to create the system, called "Saturn" after the Roman god of agriculture. The system was written in Microsoft Access 97 and designed to be used by a few users on a local area network. It was supplied with a full help menu. Later, we added a web-based forecast entry system to enable the larger clients to be able to change and review their own forecasts directly on line.
The system carried out the following functions:
The Products were classified by both their trade name and by their active chemical. Their costs were stored for each manufacturer that supplied them. A full help menu was supplied for users:
